Family Fun Day

The Swedish Mile features fun for the entire family.  Our hope is that families and kids of all ages will come out to run or walk one of the races, enjoy a drink, grab lunch from a taco truck, enjoy a self-guided tour around the Vasaloppet grounds, learn about our youth ski program “Fast Tracks,” have a free smore at the Marshmallow Shack, and explore the Vasaloppet trails in the colors of fall.  We’re working to build this into a fantastic day to be outdoors in Minnesota’s fall weather.  We hope you’ll join us.

The Course

The “Swedish Mile” is a 10K trail race on a well-marked course through the woodlands surrounding the Vasaloppet Nordic Center in Mora, Minnesota. The course starts and finishes at the Nordic Center and utilizes the Vasaloppet Ski Trails (wide & grassy) and the Fat Bike single-track trails (narrow & rugged.) Plan for roots and rocks, hills and turns, and plenty of mud. This is an adventure race with some rugged parts, please be prepared.

The 10K race is supported by one aid station near the midway point, refreshments at the finish, and lunch from Primos Tacos for all racers.   Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in the male and female categories.

The 5K trail race/fun run has all of the features listed above, without the aid station at the mid-point.

The Kids Race includes a 1-mile race and a half-mile race for our younger runners.  This shorter trail run includes a snack at the finish and a medal for all participants.

The Cause

Each winter, the Snow Farmers of Mora, Minnesota volunteer their time and equipment to extend the nordic ski season by spreading man-made snow over the Vasaloppet Nordic Center trails. This allows for high school meets, the Fast Tracks youth skiing program, nordic ski team practices, and for the Mora Vasaloppet to guarantee a race whether nature provides snow or not.

In previous years, generous donations and grant funding provided for the procurement of two snow guns, and the required infrastructure to produce snow. Each year, a team of volunteers uses their farm equipment to spread snow. The goal for the Swedish Mile is to raise enough money to cover 100% of the fuel costs associated with Snow Farming in the 2022-23 skiing season. By running this race, you’re helping to serve this great cause.
