The annual Swedish Mile Trail Race is a 10K timed trail race and a 5K fun run to raise money for snow-making operations at the Vasaloppet Nordic Center.
What about COVID-19?
The Swedish Mile race team is working with the medical community to build a great race event that is in line with the state requirements and suggestions at the time. At present, we are planning to limit registrations to 100 racers in the Swedish Mile and 100 participants in the fun run. If adaptations are required at the time of the race, changes may be made (staged start times, virtual awards ceremony, canceled brunch, etc.) All racers will be asked to sign a waiver acknowledging the risks associated with group events.
The “Swedish Mile” is a 10K trail race on a well-marked course through the woodlands surrounding the Vasaloppet Nordic Center in Mora Minnesota. The course starts and finishes at the Nordic Centers and utilizes the Vasaloppet Ski Trails (wide, grassy) and the in-development Fat Bike single track trails (narrow, rugged.) Plan for roots and rocks, hills and turns, and plenty of mud. This is an adventure race with some rugged parts, please be prepared.
The 10K race is supported by one aid station near the midway point and an aid station at the finish, featuring energy drinks, water, salty and sweet nourishment, and smiling, encouraging faces. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in the male and female categories.
The 5K fun run has all of the features listed above, without the aid station at the mid-point. 5K racers are not timed. Three prize packs will be awarded to finishers of the 5K fun run based on a drawing.
Each winter, the Snow Farmers of Mora, Minnesota volunteer their time and equipment to extend the nordic ski season by spreading man-made snow over the Vasaloppet Nordic Center trails. This allows for high school meets to be hosted, Fast Tracks youth skiing program to take place, nordic ski teams to practice, and for the Mora Vasaloppet to guarantee a race whether nature provides snow or not.
In previous years, generous donations and grant funding have provided for the procurement of two snow guns, and the required infrastructure to produce snow. Each year, a minimum of volunteers use their farm equipment to cover the trails with man-made snow. The 2020 goal for the Swedish Mile is to raise enough money to cover 100% of the fuel costs associated with
Snow Farming in the 2020-2021 skiing season. By running this race, you’re helping to serve this great cause.
