Plan to ski Vasaloppet 2018

The 2018 Vasaloppet weekend will be February 10-11. That’s less than a year away so start your training plan today. A great way is by joining the Mora Classic Series.

The series is comprised of the Snake River Canoe Race May 6, the Mora Half Marathon & 5K on August 19, the Mora Bike Tour September 16, and the Vasaloppet on February 10.

Trails closed today, Friday for skiing

Racing the clock before warm weather arrives Friday, Vasaloppet organizers will close the Nordic Center trails today, as well as the remainder the race course, to any skiing.  The trails will remain closed to skiers until the start of Saturday’s races.

Trail crews have spent weeks of making and hauling snow. Please respect their efforts and stay off the ski trails.
Trail crews face a Thursday night deadline to have all snow hauling and trail grooming completed before Friday afternoon’s warmer temperatures. Snow hauling operations will continue throughout the day as well as final course grooming for the race. The amount of heavy equipment traffic creates conflict with skiers and skiing on freshly groomed snow damages the course.

Friday’s warm temperatures will mean all grooming must be completed by late Thursday night and course marking completed very early Friday morning. Skiing on the course Friday afternoon will cause damage to the course that cannot be repaired for the race.

Early Saturday morning the course will receive a light grooming with Yellowstone groomers.

A vote for quality

Racing the clock before warm weather arrives Friday, Vasaloppet organizers decided Thursday to emphasize quality over quanity and not attempt to haul snow on a short section of trail that would have added the last half a kilometer to the 14 kilometer race course loop.

That decision will mean skiers will ski a 13.5km loop rather than the 14km loop race organizers had originally planned. Course conditions as of Wednesday afternoon remained excellent.
